The practical development and experimentation with lenses led to the invention of the compound optical microscope around 1595, and the refracting telescope in 1608, both of which appeared in the spectacle-making centres in the Netherlands. Spectacle makers created improved types of lenses for the correction of vision based more on empirical knowledge gained from observing the effects of the lenses (probably without the knowledge of the rudimentary optical theory of the day). This was the start of the optical industry of grinding and polishing lenses for spectacles, first in Venice and Florence in the late 13th century, and later in the spectacle-making centres in both the Netherlands and Germany. Spectacles were invented as an improvement of the "reading stones" of the high medieval period in Northern Italy in the second half of the 13th century. The medieval (11th or 12th century) rock crystal Visby lenses may or may not have been intended for use as burning glasses. These were primitive plano-convex lenses initially made by cutting a glass sphere in half. Between the 11th and 13th century " reading stones" were invented. The Arabic translation of Ptolemy's Optics became available in Latin translation in the 12th century ( Eugenius of Palermo 1154). The book was, however, received by medieval scholars in the Islamic world, and commented upon by Ibn Sahl (10th century), who was in turn improved upon by Alhazen ( Book of Optics, 11th century). Ptolemy (2nd century) wrote a book on Optics, which however survives only in the Latin translation of an incomplete and very poor Arabic translation. ![]() Both Pliny and Seneca the Younger (3 BC–65 AD) described the magnifying effect of a glass globe filled with water. Pliny also has the earliest known reference to the use of a corrective lens when he mentions that Nero was said to watch the gladiatorial games using an emerald (presumably concave to correct for nearsightedness, though the reference is vague). Pliny the Elder (1st century) confirms that burning-glasses were known in the Roman period. ![]() The oldest certain reference to the use of lenses is from Aristophanes' play The Clouds (424 BCE) mentioning a burning-glass. Others have suggested that certain Egyptian hieroglyphs depict "simple glass meniscal lenses". The so-called Nimrud lens is a rock crystal artifact dated to the 7th century BCE which may or may not have been used as a magnifying glass, or a burning glass. Some scholars argue that the archeological evidence indicates that there was widespread use of lenses in antiquity, spanning several millennia. The lentil also gives its name to a geometric figure. The word lens comes from lēns, the Latin name of the lentil (a seed of a lentil plant), because a double-convex lens is lentil-shaped. Lens for LSST, a planned sky surveying telescope

The afterlife waiting room in the Beetlejuice haunted house. (It’s worth noting: All of the performers and employees at Universal were wearing masks, and while the park per Florida guidelines doesn’t require guests to wear masks, they’re strongly encouraged through signage and frequent announcements over loudspeakers.) But if Universal’s sweet spot is feeling like they’re putting you right up to the edge of danger without technically crossing the line, I guess it applies to their performers as well. At one point, I watched a woman hula with a hoop completely covered in flames that were encircling her entire body. The stunt show, Halloween Horror Fuel, was part-magic show, part-aerial acrobatics performance and part-pyrotechnic extravaganza. There are definitely some less scary moments, like the Marathon of Mayhem lagoon show where clips of Universal’s classic monster movies are projected onto jets of water shooting into the sky, like in Disney California Adventure’s World of Color show. In a "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" house, Leatherface shows up around every corner, but the Universal HHN designers actually created new rooms in the murder house based on what’s pictured, but never fully explored, in the 1974 classic slasher film.Ī Slender Man-inspired monster without a face, holding his victim's head through his eye sockets? Sure, why not? Julie Tremaine In one house, the story line is that a child broke his deal with the tooth fairy, and that fairy (nothing at all like you’re picturing) murders everyone in the house, ripping their faces off to get back the teeth they were promised. This year’s icon is Jack, a fan-favorite killer clown with a twisted, evil grin who likes to just show up and scare you to your bones by sneaking up on you when you least expect it. There’s a Beetlejuice house for the first time ever (barring a brief weekend appearance last year just before Halloween), and one that captures all of the “icon” mascots of years past into one macabre walkthrough. Halloween Horror Nights this year includes a lot of throwbacks to HHN events past. 3 this year, but it felt a little like stepping back into history. I went on opening night, which fell on Sept. This year’s event features 10 walk-through haunted houses, five scare zones where costumed “scareactors” charge at you wielding chainsaws or try to grab you to be the next hanged man dangling from those same gallows.Ī scareactor in one of the Halloween Horror Nights scare zones. This year is the 30th anniversary of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando, which started as an homage to "Beetlejuice" in 1991 as "Fright Nights." The popularity of the event grew in tandem with the intensity of the scares. Halloween Horror Nights is easily the scariest Halloween attraction you can visit this year, and if you love scaring yourself to death, there’s absolutely nothing as wickedly fun. This event is absolutely nothing like Disneyland’s annual Halloween event, Oogie Boogie Bash. Unlike her, I knew exactly how scary it was going to be - on a 1-10 scale, I’d give parts of the event an 11 - but also unlike her, I welcomed every single scream. ![]() It was the first time my horror-averse friend had ever attended HHN, but not mine. Halloween Horror Nights 30 at Universal Orlando. ![]() That night, the 40-year-old photographer disappeared. On 14th August, 1989, Birgit Meier was supposed to meet her estranged husband to discuss the terms of their impending divorce. If Christmas romances and Black Fridays aren’t your post-turkey day entertainment preferences, then there’s always murder. You could set your watch to the regularity of these drops on the streaming service. ![]() A worthy addition to the Netflix true crime catalogue.Yup, it’s that time of month again: the new Netflix true-crime release-palooza. What keeps you hooked is the police’s ineptitude and disinterest that are equally shocking and frustrating, and her brother’s refusal to give up. What’s most heartbreaking for the family is that, if the police had done their job properly, Birgit’s disappearance and subsequent murder could have been solved within six months, rather than twenty-eight years.Īs I write this review there is neither a critic rating not an audience score on RT.Ĭould the story of Wolfgang’s investigation and subsequent solving of his sister’s disappearance have been told in fewer than four (almost hour-long) episodes, or maybe four, forty-five-minute episodes? Possibly. What is most evident is that if Birgit’s brother hadn’t been a former high ranking police officer with connections within the forensic, legal and psychology fields, Birgit’s case file would still be gathering dust along with other unclosed cases thirty-two years after her disappearance.Īnd that’s the important thing this docuseries highlights how so many disappearances remain unsolved because their families lack the finances and connections required to undertake their own investigation when the police fail them. However, another possible suspect became known to the police, but they failed to investigate him fully leaving him free to cover his tracks and his startling secrets to go undetected for decades.Īlthough, at the request of Birgit’s brother Wolfgang, her house was treated as a crime scene much of the evidence gathered was lost or destroyed so even when DNA profiling improved some twenty years later, there was little to test. Although there were possible motives for him to resort to murder rather than divorce, there was no evidence that he had any involvement in her disappearance. ![]() Naturally, Birgit’s husband became the prime suspect. With two double murders in the Göhrde State Forest the month before, the police’s full focus was on solving those, and as they considered Birgit to be nothing more than a missing person, her case was given low priority. Even so, the police still determined she was just missing rather than a kidnap or even murder victim. While there was no evidence of violence at Birgit’s home in Lüneburg, Germany, some things were amiss: her bedroom door was open, and her car was still parked in the drive. ![]() The police’s mishandling started from the moment they opened the case. Their incompetence at the time and disinterest in following up new leads presented years later is jaw dropping and infuriating to the dispassionate viewer, giving us some understanding of just how distressing this must have been for her family. For the Netflix blurb to describe the mistakes made by the police in their investigation into the disappearance of Birgit Meier as “missteps” is a gross understatement. When a loved one vanishes and things begin to point to foul play, you expect the police to do all they can to uncover the truth of what happened. When she went to her mother’s home, she found her gone. All seemed well until her daughter phoned her the next morning and got no answer. After he left, Birgit called her mother, telling her their talk was amicable. Netflix blurb: “After Birgit Meier vanishes in 1989, police missteps plague the case for years, but her brother never wavers in his tireless quest to find the truth.”īirgit’s husband Harald visited her to discuss the settlement in their upcoming divorce. This makes Birgit’s disappearance feel more personal and lends her story a greater significance. What is different though is that the four-part series is told from the perspective of the victim’s family and the professionals who assisted Birgit’s brother, Wolfgang in his search for the truth of what happened to her. Dig Deeper follows the usual format of talking head recollections and reconstructions. Another week, another true-crime docuseries on Netflix. 4/2/2023 0 Comments The librarian pro wrestler![]() ![]() Well, after you finish this article, then go check out some of his work! The casual or younger fans of wrestling may not remember how great Gary Hart was during his time, but it would be criminal to not include him in my list. While in WCCW Hart not only worked as an incredible mouthpiece for his stable of wrestlers but he also booked one of the best feuds in wrestling history between the Fabulous Freebirds and the Von Erich brothers. During his run in the wrestling business, Hart managed some of the greatest performers to ever lace up a pair of boots such as The Great Muta, The Great Kabuki, Terry Funk, Gino Hernandez, and The Texas Outlaws (Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch). This might be due to my affinity with the old WCCW territory, but Gary Hart will go down as my personal favorite manager ever. Behind the scenes, Hart has done everything from booking programs in WCW to composing the entrance music for numerous performers. Most fans today probably know Hart as the loudmouth with the megaphone who seemingly has been side-by-side with Hulk Hogan for as long as they can remember. Hart was named Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s “Manager of the Year” in 1987 while with the WWF and then again in 1994 while in the WCW. It was later in his first year with the company that Jimmy would make his biggest impact outside of the Memphis territory when he helped form the legendary Hart Foundation. ![]() Once they split Hart would go on to take part in one of the greatest wrestling angles of all time as he paired with comedian Andy Kaufman to torment “The King”.įrom there he would move over to the WWF in 1985 where he would get his feet wet by managing Greg “The Hammer” Valentine.
